It is with great sadness that I have to tell the members of the BMAA that our President Keith Negal passed away on the afternoon of Friday the 4th of February 2011, peacefully in hospital.

Keith has been without a doubt the most positive driving force behind the BMAA and within British microlighting. His drive and enthusiasm spread across other European countries, creating the European Microloight Federation and making his name a respected one in recreational aviation across the world.

Keith was a great a friend to many and will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with Keith’s wife Shirley , his brother and sons.

I have just spoken to his wife, Shirley, and passed on my condolences.

Keith was a friend who I held in the highest of esteem. Keith was a fighter.

Its a sad day. I know I am a better person for having known him. I know Microlighting has lost a king.

Last time I saw Keith it was back in August 2009 at Calais, when he was organising our mass departure for the Bleriot  Centenary flight.

He was on this occasion, as he was on every other I saw him, full of enthusiasm, taking all in his stride, and with good humour

RIP Keith

Steve

His enthusiasm and energy was boundless, and he was always working for others selflessly with no thought of thanks.

He achieved and experienced far more in his life than most folks who live to 100, and was on something of his second life after being blown up defusing a bomb in Northern Ireland and coming within a hairbreadth of death. He lived very much like he was in given a second go, and had to go for it full speed, and microlighting became a great passion and an outlet for his energy.

The cliche was never more apt - the broke the mould when they made him.

Keith was my mate and my mentor and teacher. He has left the deepest mark on me. I am priviledged to have known him.

That's very sad news. I met Keith at Calais in 2009 where, as Steve says, he was taking French bureaucracy and an ATC strike comfortably in his stride!

Keith was always helpful and generous when I was involved in the competitions. I admired him as someone who would get things done and for his energy. I would have liked to have known him better. Such a waste.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.........
Bless you Keith.

It was an unpleasant shock to find out about this yesterday. My thoughts are with his family and friends. I really did think he was indestructible.
He had something that most of us will never have. Patience with the democratic process and an ability to use it for the advantage of the rest of us.

Being in the wilds of Sudan I am only picking this up now, probably like most in microlighting I only met Keith a couple of times.

The force of his personality and drive along with great good humor is something I am privileged to have witnessed.

My thoughts go to his family at this time.
