    Hi Ian

a good bead of high temp. silicon run along the spring from hook to hook stops them resonating, and if the hooks do snap then it stops the bit going into the prop.
never had a spring break but i do change them around 100hrs..

    John,

[3]I have just been re-fitting my 582 exhaust and in the process of trying to find the torque settings for the manifold bolts in the Rotax manual I stumbled across a tip to reduce spring fatigue. Wrap some wire round to interconnect the springs (see scan of the manual attached)[/3]

Quick update on the exhaust springs. Since adding the wire as suggested in the manual we have not had a single spring fail. I call that a result!!

Three months on and still no springs have broken :-). It just shows why RTFM can be so valuable!!!!

Another trick I've been told is to fill the springs with high temp silicon (in addition to the safety wire). In case anything lets go, the silicon will tend to hold the parts together so they wont end up in your prop.

Also tends to damp out resonances in the individual coil turns.

Remember those metal framed beds/bunk beds Remploy used to make and sell (seen in scout bunkhouses throughout the land and in many municipal/ army type diggs) They had a matress base of wire nett held in the frame with about 100 short steel springs.
If you ever see one (often used as a temporary fence repair or pen gate by the more basic Bullock Wallopers in my parish!)
Grab all the springs out of it. The are a retro fit for the awfull rotax ones and Never but never break.
At one time I had a gallon icecream tub of them and over the years have used them all up helping visiting souls who had landed and discovered one of the poxy austrian ones had broke.
other than that all the above is good stuff.
