  • 912uls hard to start

A friend of mine is having a great deal of trouble starting his 912uls!!

It's fitted with a soft start but on cranking gives the impression that it is trying to run backwards. Trying on one mag (either) doesn't make a great deal of difference but the soft start mag is ' not so bad'!

Whilst my first thought was ignition modules - the fact that a good start is not achieved on one or the other mags now leads me to think differently.

Not sure where or if I read this but I seem to 'remenber' that worn sprag clutch can give these symptoms??

So anybody confirm the sprag clutch thought or any suggestions??

Paul that certainly sounds like the sprag playing up.

A worn spray clutch manifests it self as sudden and violent stopping during trying to start. Kind of like a mini sudden seizure. It can do a lot of damage to engine mounts, gearboxes and can even break props, so needs sorting ASAP.

Is the battery fully charged and up to the job?

Steve, yes battery no issue - engine was starting great and still turns engine over with no trouble.

Many thanks for all your replies - sprag clutch replaced courtesy of Simon at Eccleston Aviation (great service as usual).
Engine now starting ' on the button'!

              Regards
