  • C42 Wind screen

Hi, I need to remove the wind screen hoop tube on a c42, my main concern is how best to remove the pop rivets without damaging the screen . I believe the rivets are soft aluminium and would need drilling out. Is this the only method or are there other ways of removing them. I assume the screen is Lexan and not Plexiglass which is more prone to cracking under stress.

I have carefully drilled, but just deep enough to weaken the 'flanged' part of the rivet head so you can break it off sideways with a regular screwdriver blade or similar. So the drill is bigger in diameter than the rivet core body.
Alternatively where that was impossible I used a Dremel mini grinder to remove the rivet head, then push the rest back through the hole with a thin dia rod/. A light blow might with care assist in this. Problem with Dremel is it gernerates a great deal of loacalised heat which the Ali conducts into your Lexan. This is NOT good !
    So a slow process.

Perhaps doing several rivets a little each and returning when cool is one way ?

The cost of a C42 screen makes it very worthwhile to buy a hand drill. They are much more controllable than any electric drill and, because you can drill slowly, you won't generate too much heat.

Thanks for the advice guys, slow and gentle seems the best approach.
