    Nearly right Jeremy.
It is actually the forerunner to the Phantom...it is a "Mirage"
Phantom has Struts, this has wires supporting the wings.... It has no ailerons, but it had pretty useless flaperons.
Had a lot of fun in those machines in the early days, had about 6 of them in total in Ireland.
Early 80's.... no instruction,no licencing, no insurance, and probably no sense.... but great fun.

It is fitted with a Kawasaki 440.
Really powerful little unit...... I had one fitted with 2 Yamaha 100cc driven with a toothed belt, 5 solos and 4 belt failures with it !!! ... removed it and fitted a Cayuna 430, blew up on climb out first time, removed it and fitted a Rotax 447 with prop up front.... really good. Climed like stink.....no VSI fitted but at least 1500 fpm.
We still have 3 of those in quite good condition..... may one day get them flying again.
This is the one with the Rotax 447 fitted

                    what's this...on ebay?

the auction ends in 15mins. I wouldn't have thought there was 500 worth of anything here, but is it actually something special?

The machine on floats is a Moyes Dragonfly (or a close copy), designed as a hanglider tug. Very prolific in the US.

Quite a few Phantoms are wire braced as I recall. I have a suspicion that they are still sold like this; certainly I saw quite a few of them at Sun'n'Fun a few years ago that didn't have struts.

What was the engine, a Robin 330?

I thought that all the Phantoms in the UK were wire braced, is anybody aware of a strut braced one here? Jeremy is quite right both are available from the factory in the States.

A friend of mine has recently bought a Phantom and has fallen in love with flying all over again. His check pilot climbed out after his flight with a a huge grin and declared that if a man didn't enjoy flying that aircraft he was no pilot.

I look forward to my chance at trying it
